Calgary to London, UK - $726 to $767 CAD roundtrip including taxes | July and August flights (summer travel)

There are some flights available from Calgary to London, UK for peak summer July and August travel starting at $726 CAD roundtrip including taxes, which is around $500 cheaper than you usually see for July and August travel to Europe.
However, some of these $726 flights route through Las Vegas, and while the stopover on the way there is decent (3.5 hours), the stopover on the way back is nearly 8 hours. These flights fly in and out of London Gatwick (LGW)
*But* there are also some flights out there for $767 CAD that route through Seattle and New York with ideal layover times (90 min to 4 hours). These flights fly in and out of London Heathrow (LHR).
While these flights are all available for purchase through Delta, some of the overseas legs are actually operated by Virgin Atlantic.

How to find and book these flights
1. Start with this Google Flights search...
Google Flights search: Calgary to London, UK
Click on the departure date box to open up the calendar view and look for cheap date combinations.
Tip: To find the flights with better layover times (1 to 4 hours), look for the dates that are $768 roundtrip. Focus on the flights that stop in New York (JFK) and Seattle (SEA). These flights seem to only be available for August travel. I haven't seen any for July.
Not all combinations of dates and flights will work. Some seem to lead you to a dead end. On Google Flights, you should see the 'Book with Delta' button come up after selecting all of your flights. If you don't, it's a dead end (not bookable). You may want to try slightly different dates or flights.

2. Select your flights and click through from Google Flights to the Delta website> for booking.

I think an 8 hour layover is much more ideal than a 4 hour layover. Am I in the minority here?
I guess everyone has their own preference. Somewhere between 2.5 to 4 hours usually feels most ideal to me on international flights.
