WestJet has dropped the price of a few flights from Calgary to Varadero, Cuba down to $351 CAD roundtrip including taxes.
The flights are nonstop both ways.
This is a CBO deal (Checked Bag Only). You cannot bring carry-on. However, in addition to your checked bag, you can still bring a personal item (something that fits under the seat in front of you).
If you have the WestJet World Elite credit card, which comes with free checked bags, you can book these flights for $258 CAD roundtrip.
To save money, sometimes couples or families will book one passenger with a checked bag, and the others without.
Yes, it's possible to visit Varadero without staying at a resort. Have a look at the Casa Particulares on Airbnb.
Focus on the ones that have review scores of 4.92 or higher. You can find highly rated places to stay for around $60 CAD/night.
BUT, statistically speaking, if Cuba is going to encounter a hurricane, August or September would be the most likely month.
Not every August brings a hurricane. Based on the last 20 years of data, Cuba has had about a 35% chance of being affected by a tropical cyclone in August.

1. Start with the following Google Flights search:
Google Flights: Calgary to Varadero, Cuba
- Click on the departure date box to open up the calendar view.
- Browse for the cheapest dates by adjusting the trip length at the bottom.
- Look for the dates that are $281 roundtrip.
2. Go to Skyscanner or Kayak
- Search for a flight from Calgary (YYC) to Varadero, Cuba (VRA)
- Try the same dates you found on Google Flights.
- The price should drop to $258 roundtrip. WestJet charges $95 roundtrip for a checked bag.
