Crazy price drops to Central America!! From $391 roundtrip after taxes
8
December
Update: December 13th - The fare war to Central America appears to be over. Prices on all airlines look to be back up to the $700-$1000 range.
------
Update: December 12th - The crazy prices to Central America continue, with Delta and Continental getting in on the action now. Delta & Continental look to have matched many of the prices put out by AA, on certain dates.
This also gives you a better chance of finding more reasonable flights (shorter stopovers, no overnighters) to Central America.
Here's what I've seen so far, using a 3 day flexible date search on Kayak...
Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) - $381 roundtrip after taxes (reasonable flight lengths both ways on Delta)
Tegucigalpa, Honduras (TGU) - $362 roundtrip after taxes (Delta: long flights both ways, Continental: long flights on the way there, short ones coming home)
Belize (BZE) - $403 roundtrip after taxes (Delta: long flights on the way there, reasonable ones coming home).
-----------------------
American Airlines has just made an unadvertised cut on their fares to Central America from all across Canada. The prices are ridiculous, and I believe the largest overall price cuts from Calgary to Central America, ever.
Here's what I've discovered so far...
- Prices between February and May look to be affected the most
- Some routes on AA to Central America require an overnight stay in the U.S.
Here are the cities that have dropped , and I'll provide an example search on Kayak in late February for each one.
Try your own dates and see what comes up. Play around on Kayak to find cheap ones with good routings.

You can also play around with a multi-city search, and fly into one of those cities, and out of another, for a cheap price.

Awesome deal. I may have a conference in Costa Rica in April. Any advice on where to stay? Will need accomodations on the dates outside of the conference itself.
What about American Airlines filing for bankruptcy protection? I am wondering what recourse I would have if I booked a flight and they went bust. Can you advise? Seems like an amazing deal though!
I think this article can explain the situation better than I can...

The bottom line is that airlines do file for Chapter 11 a lot, without it impacting operations. At the same time, nobody has a crystal ball.
I'm liking the idea of into Belize, out of San Salvador - $392 roundtrip after taxes. Short stopover each way. Look for Friday flights to Belize, Tue/Wed flights from San Salvador to find the best connections each way.
We were in the process of booking 1 of 3 flights to Belize via AA when it crashed and we had to restart and saw that the fares had returned to normal prices....luckily Delta wasn't that quick. Not only did we get roundtrip (taxes & baggage) flights in and out of Belize on the dates we wanted we got it for 100 cheaper than the AA flights would have cost. Yes we have crappy layovers but what do you expect for $403.65 each over Reading Week~~~ Awesome deal!
Awesome! AA's crappy website saved you some cash :)
Hard to believe that before this year you would never see flights to Belize fall much below $1000.
And now this year flights were available for not much more than a trip to Vancouver.
