There have been some pretty crazy prices from Calgary to New Zealand lately. Some of them may have been unintentional price drops by the airlines.
This one is an officially advertised sale by Air New Zealand. It's a 72 hour sale on dates between mid June and late November.
The prices aren't quite as crazy as seen lately, but still about 38% below the typical best prices between Calgary and New Zealand.
The November dates are probably the most desirable, as it's late spring in New Zealand & Australia at that time.
Other destinations that have dropped in price:
Rarotonga, Cook Islands - $834 CAD roundtrip including taxes (54% below the typical best price!)
Melbourne, Australia - $1025 (40% below)
Sydney, Australia - $1041 (38% below)
Brisbane, Australia - $1043 (40% below)

Yes, it can be done, at least theoretically. Air New Zealand has an amazing deal to Auckland going on right now out of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Return flights are less than $500 after tax for the end of May, beginning of June.
