YYC Airport: Give yourself plenty of time (as in, 3 hours for domestic travel)

YYC airport

Many are reporting that you should give yourself plenty of time these days if you're travelling out of YYC Airport, particularly if your flights are in the morning on WestJet flights.

Some tips:

- check in 24 hours prior

- make sure your ID isn't expired

- Showing up 3 hours early for domestic travel isn't a terrible idea.

- Those working at YYC might be taking the brunt of traveller's stress 8-10 hours a day, being caused by things out of their control, so be kind!

"Yes, especially if your flight is in the morning. It’s that busy right now. Construction by the airport, domestic check in is miles away from the gate, kiosk not working because of high volume, belt jam, long line up at security and so on.

WestJet has up to 25 flights from 7-11am, not including the other airlines and only 3 security check and lately domestic flights are departing from D (international) terminal. which is miles away. And no YYC Link (golf cart to travel between concourses)".

(Thanks to Rini for the tips and info)

Other reports from those flying out of YYC lately:

"Check in kiosk at KLM not working yesterday. Long line ups. Counter check in."

"I flew out of Calgary on a domestic WestJet flight on July 10th and it was absolute chaos. I was there 90 minutes early and JUST made it to my gate in time."

"I can only confirm the above message. 1/2 of Self check in kiosks don’t work. No ground staff to be found to help you out. So just find one that does work. Also be prepared that only one door is open to departures and it can take extra time to walk from one end of the airport and back to the other ones where the WestJet counters are. The usual 1.5 hr before departure (with pre check in and bag pre-paid), allowed my kids enough time to get through customs and go straight to the gate for the last boarding call."

"Be prepared as it is busy to travel. Also note that they are using the international terminal for domestic flights as well so be prepared to walk. You check-in in the domestic terminal and then go to your gate. The link past security is also not operating to take you through the airport from terminal to terminal so it’s all walking. Better to be early and give yourself time."

"Also bring snacks. There is very little open for services in the airport. And the few things that were open were lined up."

"Yup we were flying without bags & definitely not expecting that many people. It was insane yesterday when we flew… security took us almost an hour as well."

"I can only confirm the reports in today's post re: flying out of YYC. Check-in & boarding for our flight last Wednesday morning was the worst/longest I have ever experienced for a domestic flight. In addition to the issues raised in your post, Westjet's new baggage drop machines were barely working, resulting in huge line-ups. And neither the baggage drop machines nor their bag tag kiosks could read the bar code on the boarding passes I had printed at home. Agent said they'd been a problem and printed us new ones. A terrible experience all around."

But on the other hand, it varies...

"I have flown both domestic and international in the past couple of weeks. The airport is getting back to being quite busy yet many stores and services haven’t opened yet. Nothing is required, besides a mask, to fly domestically. Internationally, it is also very busy over on that side and there is almost nothing open to grab a snack or coffee before flying. Lines are typical of summer time. We had almost no lines waiting to go through security - but this can be true at any time. Some days and some times are just better than others."
