Huge fare war from Calgary to Amsterdam - $616 roundtrip after taxes - affecting fares up to May 2012

There's a huge fare war to Amsterdam (AMS) going on at the moment. You do see the occasional charter flight on Air Transat to Amsterdam that drops down to this level, but it's extremely rare to see nearly all the major airlines drop a price to Europe like this that affects such a large range of dates.

They look to have dropped the price of most flights that occur between now and mid-May 2012.

Here's how to find them...

1. Go to https://www.kayak.com

2. Do a 3 day flexible date search for a roundtrip flight from Calgary to Amsterdam that occurs between now and May 15, 2012.

3. The airlines involved in this fare war appear to be Air Canada, United/Continental, Lufthansa, American Airlines, and possibly others. Some of the flights have good routings, some don't.

What you want to do after your search on Kayak is click on the dropdown menu beside 'Sort' and choose 'Duration (short to long)'.

Next, you'll want to use the price slider on the left hand side and bring it down to $650 or so. Now you're looking at the fastest flights that are under $650 roundtrip after taxes.

Here's an example search in May 2012 to get you started:

Of course you can also use this as a 'gateway' flight to get somewhere else cheaply in Europe. Plenty of low-cost carriers have flights from Amsterdam.

Trying to get a deal for Jan.6 -15th, but the lowest I'm getting is $1108. Could you help me maybe find a better deal for AMS for these dates.... they are flexible by 1-2 days. Thanks.

I think some of the airlines have put their fares back up today. Doesn't appear to be nearly as many cheap dates. A flexible date search on Kayak really will reveal everything that's out there for this deal.

You can also try searching directly on American Airlines website using open jaw flights if that appeals to you more. For example, May 5th (Calgary to Barcelona) and May 13th (Amsterdam to Calgary) comes up as $617. Use the multi-city search. I've seen some to Paris (substituted for Barcelona) down to the ~$640 mark. Trick is to always include a leg to Amsterdam. Too bad that some of the flights are a bit of a milk run, but if you're on a budget then this could be the deal for you.

My Girlfriend and I were going to book today and looks like all the flights have gone up. We found an Air Canada flight for $100 (before tax), now $645. Looking to fly on to Budapest or Vienna from Amsterdam, maybe that multi-city search will have something.
I will keep looking, have to book soon.

Actually the deal seems to be still on... just have to find the fares in a complicated way like Idea said.

    Step 1 - Search for your preferred dates on kayak.com - Example - http://www.kayak.com/flights/YYC-AMS/2012-04-28/PAR-YYC/2012-05-13

Step 2 - Don't click on the fares because they Kayak links give you more expensive prices than aa.com. However, if you go to directly to aa.com (Canadian site) and re-search your dates, the price will be the low Kayak price (or lower yet).

Step 3 - Go directly to aa.com and search for your Amsterdam/Paris flight again. Taaaa daaa. Pricing at C$653 return with taxes, cheaper than what Kayak shows. And you get to see two great cities instead of one.

Step 4 - In Europe, take a train or something from Amsterdam to Paris.
